Solo travelling in Mykonos!

“Boldness, be my friend!””
— Cymbeline Act I, scene vi

LOCATION:  Mykonos, Greece

DRESS:  Caroline Constas

HEAD SCARF:  Claire's

While I was on a yacht sailing to the island of Delos, I had the thought of writing this blog about solo travelling, which I often do.  As women, we still get that tired old response of "WHY?!"  Why travel alone.  As if that even requires a response.  That led me to thinking about Shakespeare's play Cymbeline, for some reason. I mean, the shit Imogen had to go through in that play was crazy.  From Iachimo's ridiculous generalizations that all women are sluts, to Posthumus' decision to murder his wife he "loves" (Imogen) because he thinks she slept with another man, to Imogen literally having to change her identity to a man because it's the only way for these men to see her for who she truly is.  (I mean, come on, P should be grateful that Imogen married him anyway, and look what he turned around and did!)  Actually, these are really common Shakespearean themes…… filled with egotistical thoughts about women.  Unfortunately, nothing new under this post-dynastic sun….but it's still crazy.  Women are still doing/saying/explaining things to justify who we are, who we want to be, look, act ,etc.  When in truth, there is no justification ever needed.

MYKONOS.  Beautiful island.  I went there alone, and had a great time.  I'm not a huge party animal, so don't believe all the hype that Mykonos is just for people who want to party till they drop.

Solo travelling is something I'd recommend everyone do.  First off, if you're inclined to do something, then do it.  You don't have to convince anyone that what you're doing is the right thing.  If it's right for you, then it's right.

People think there are these invisible rules you have to live your life by.  They believe you have to do things in a certain way just because.  If there were rules on how to live YOUR life (because everyone is unique), you would have come out of your mother's uterus holding a  life manual.  The fact that you didn't should tell you a lot.  You don't owe anybody an explanation for doing what is right for you.  Someone's opinion, good or bad, does not reflect on you in any way.

This Carolina Constas off the shoulder dress was a perfect choice for the hot, Mediterrean weather of Mykonos.  The long, billowy sleeves matched the waves of the Aegean sea, all the while protecting my arms from the unrelenting heat of the sun.  The length was great for the yacht as well, still keeping me cool.

Do you have a statement skirt?

July 16, 2018 by DeAnne

There are two reasons why I chose this quote. One of the reasons I chose this particular quote is an obvious one:  MY SKIRT.  Let's face it, this skirt, by Caroline Constas, is the pièce de résistance of my outfit.  This picture was taken on my 46th birthday, and it definitely received plenty of attention from many a passers by.  With its stripes and color, it is reminiscent of a bee. Interesting note:  One of the manifestations of the Mother Goddess, the most ancient deity in archeological records, is the bee where it lives in the hive with their queen.  The second reason I chose the above quote.

I paired this regal skirt with a Red Valentino denim shirt.  It lent a casual feel for an afternoon in the city.  On my head I wore a raffia headband, that resembles a crown..:-)  On my feet are some Gucci wedges with gold ribbon from their summer 2016 collection.  This fabulous circular straw bag is from Etsy…..love it!

BEE sure and BEE the queen (because we for sure aren't shrews, and I don't believe Katherine was either) that you are at all times.   And don't forget to add a touch of regalia to your outfits, either! ;-) Thanks for stopping by!  Love ya!

“All that glisters is not gold. Often have you heard that told. Many a man his life hath sold but my outside to behold. Gilded tombs do worms enfold. Had you been as wise and bold, young in limbs, in judgment old, your answer had not been inscrolled.”
— Merchant of Venice Act II, vii

Wearing metallics...

July 13, 2018 by DeAnne

The scene of this picture isn't Belmont, but I do happen to be in Italy, which I think is apropos. And in this skirt, it's possible to channel your inner Portia and have suitors battling it out just to spend some time with you! However, in this case, choosing the nice, shiny object is a win all around.   This skirt always gives me LIFE.  This pleated, golden skirt is one of those pieces that will be in your wardrobe until you're really ready for a tomb.  (Okay, I'll try and stop being morbid, but S. started it.)   It's a classic.  The way it catches the light will mesmerize little sweet babies as well as those old perverted men...so consider yourself warned! I often pair really dressy pieces, like this skirt, with gym shoes, and a t-shirt to give it a more casual feel. It makes me feel like I'm not overdressed for the grocery store, yet it appeals to the "extraness" that has always been a part of my aesthetic.  It's also a great way to introduce a bit of metallic into your own wardrobe. Don't ever feel like you have to dim your shine for anyone or any reason.  Shine on...and shine brightly!
